Selling to Australia: A Shopify Localisation Checklist
Prepare an Australian Shopify shopping journey with clear currency, local delivery information, product content and a consistent market experience.
An Australian visitor needs more than an Australian flag in a country selector. They need to understand the displayed currency, whether the product can reach their address and what the purchase involves. A useful localisation review follows that whole decision, from the first landing page to the order information.
This checklist focuses on the website experience. Your business still needs to approve its shipping operations, policy wording and tax requirements before a developer implements them. Start with the market you can actually serve rather than copying a competitor’s promises.
Define the Australian offer
Document which products are available, where they are dispatched from and which delivery destinations you support. Identify any items with different lead times or restrictions. These differences should be available to the person writing product content and configuring checkout.
Decide whether the offer is the same as in other markets. A campaign promoting a particular collection should lead to products that are available to the intended customer. If an item cannot be delivered to the selected region, explain that before the shopper invests time in choosing options.
Make the currency understandable throughout
Check the currency shown on the product page, cart and checkout. A number without context can be ambiguous for a visitor who has arrived through an international campaign. Review promotional artwork as well as the underlying price fields.
Shopify’s international tools support market-specific domains and localised experiences, with currency behaviour depending on the store’s configuration and payment setup. Confirm current eligibility and settings in your account. Do not promise that adding a display-only currency selector changes the currency used for every transaction.
Write delivery information customers can use
Separate dispatch time from delivery time where that distinction matters. Explain when the estimate begins, which destinations it covers and whether certain items have different arrangements. A short, accurate explanation is more useful than a broad claim about fast shipping.
Test several representative addresses through the available shipping configuration. Include a normal destination and one that may have a different service level. Compare the wording on the product page with the options offered later in the journey so the customer does not receive conflicting messages.
Review language, units and product details
Check measurement units, product naming and examples for the intended audience. A product described with unfamiliar sizing terms may need a local explanation. Use the actual product specification as the source rather than changing a measurement label without reviewing its value.
Localisation also affects small details such as contact hours and date wording. If your support team is in another country, state the time zone and offer a practical way to contact it. Avoid making a visitor calculate whether a promised response window refers to their location or yours.
Preserve a coherent market journey
Enter from a product link, a collection link and a campaign destination. Confirm that the visitor can find or change the market and that navigation does not unexpectedly switch the experience. Review links in menus, banners, cart controls and customer emails where applicable.
If market URLs are introduced or changed, record the intended destinations and review the search implications before publication. A separate URL is a lasting content decision, not just a way to change a flag. Keep the structure aligned with the markets your team can maintain.
Run an Australian acceptance scenario
Write a plain-language scenario for the launch review: an Australian customer arrives from a campaign, checks a product, chooses an option, reviews delivery and reaches checkout. Give the reviewer the scenario without explaining every click.
Record the result against this checklist:
- The displayed currency is clear and consistent with the configured purchase flow.
- Product availability matches the Australian offer.
- Delivery wording agrees with the configured shipping options.
- Units and size guidance make sense for the product and audience.
- Support information includes the relevant time zone.
An international store earns confidence through consistency. Use the acceptance review to find gaps between the campaign promise and the operational reality before expanding the advertising or adding another market.
