A Google Tag Manager Handover Checklist

Make a Tag Manager handover useful with clear ownership, event definitions, preview evidence, version notes and a record of what each tag does.

By Bright Light Technology4 min read

A tag container can outlive the people who originally configured it. Without a handover, a new marketer may see many tags and triggers but have little idea which ones still matter. That uncertainty makes routine changes slower and increases the chance of duplicating measurement.

The purpose of the handover is to explain the implementation in business language and provide enough technical context to review it safely. It should help the next person understand both the intended outcome and the evidence used to verify it.

Keep ownership with the business

Record the relevant account, container and connected measurement destinations. Identify the business owner and the roles responsible for editing, reviewing and publishing. The handover should not rely on a supplier’s private account being the only way to operate the setup.

Use the access controls supported by the service and agree the responsibilities before changes are made. Do not place passwords or recovery secrets in a general handover file. A list of account identifiers and authorised owners is useful; a shared collection of login credentials is a different and riskier arrangement.

Create an event dictionary

For each important event, write the business action it represents, the trigger point and the destination receiving it. Distinguish a link click from a successful form save and a checkout start from a completed purchase. Those distinctions prevent a future reviewer from optimising toward the wrong outcome.

Include the expected parameters and their meaning. For revenue events, record how value and currency are defined. For enquiry events, explain whether the event confirms a saved submission or simply an attempt. Keep personal information out of event fields unless a specifically supported and approved integration requires otherwise.

Explain the dependency on the website

Document the data or page behaviour each trigger depends on. A selector based on a button label can stop matching after a copy edit. A data-layer event can change when a developer replaces a component. The next person needs to know which site changes require a measurement review.

Where possible, agree stable event contracts between the developer and the marketer. The handover should describe the required behaviour without forcing everyone to inspect the container before making an ordinary website change. Add examples that use safe test values rather than customer information.

Include preview and debugging evidence

Google Tag Manager’s preview tools help examine tag behaviour before publishing container changes. Capture the relevant test case, the event sequence and whether the intended tag fired. Review the result in the receiving system when that is needed to confirm the complete path.

Do not treat a fired tag as proof of every downstream outcome. A request can be sent with the wrong configuration or parameter. The handover should separate the browser observation from confirmation that the receiving service interpreted the event as intended.

Describe versions and publication decisions

Use meaningful version notes describing the business purpose of a release. Include the changes, reviewer and relevant checks. A version labelled only with a person’s initials or an unexplained date offers little help when a problem appears later.

Google also documents container export and import. An export can support review and change records, but it should not be confused with ownership of every connected analytics or advertising account. Record what the export contains and where the wider configuration remains managed.

Finish with open questions and a review trigger

List unresolved issues honestly, including events that could not be fully tested. Assign an owner and the evidence needed to close each one. A useful handover makes limitations visible rather than describing an unverified setup as complete.

Include these items in the final pack:

  • Business account and container ownership.
  • An event dictionary and destination list.
  • The website dependencies for important triggers.
  • Preview evidence and relevant downstream checks.
  • Published version notes and any exported records.
  • The changes that should prompt another review.

The best handover reduces the amount of guesswork required for the next sensible improvement. It connects implementation details to business meaning so maintenance does not depend on remembering what one person intended months earlier.
